The Advent Wreath Tradition

The Advent wreath is the traditional centerpiece of the Christmas season. Most often, each wreath holds four candles, lit progressively in anticipation of Christmas. For the first week of Advent, a purple candle is lit to celebrate Hope. For the second week, another purple candle is lit to celebrate Peace. For the third week, the pink candle is generally lit to celebrate Joy. And for the fourth week, the final purple candle is lit to celebrate Love. The evergreens symbolize eternal life, and the increasingly bright light of the candles celebrates our emergence from darkness as Christmas approaches.
