The Way of the Cross ~ St. Alphonsus Liguori

During the Turkish occupation of the Holy Land in the late Middle Ages, when pilgrims were prevented from visiting its sacred sites, the custom arose of making replicas of those holy places, where the faithful might come to pray.  One of the most popular of these devotions was the "Stations of the Way of the Cross," which were imitations of the "stations," or stopping places of prayer on the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. By the late sixteenth century the fourteen stations as we know them today, were erected in almost all Catholic churches.

Among the best known prayers for the Way of the Cross are those first published in Italian by St. Alphonsus Liguori in 1761, which are presented here in a new, revised translation. In his brief introduction to this devotion, St. Alphonsus wrote: "the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross represents the sorrowful journey that Jesus Christ made with the cross on His shoulders, to die on Calvary for the love of us.  We should, therefore, practice this devotion with the greatest possible fervor, placing ourselves in spirit beside our Savior as He walked this sorrowful way, uniting our tears with His, and offering to Him both our compassion and our gratitude."

    Worthy Walk with Jesus

Posted by Jen M on 26th Feb 2024

This is the edition my parish uses for Stations of the Cross. It has beautiful reflections on how to apply to daily life after each station is pondered on. Great way to live the Passion with Christ.

Great Stations of the Cross booklet

Posted by CARMEN DEJESUS on 14th Apr 2023

The booklet was mailed quickly. It didn't cost much. The shipping cost was more than the product cost but that's okay. I wanted my own Way of the Cross booklet. I use the same one in Church and I wanted to be able to do the Stations other than during Lent. This booklet has illustrations of the fourteen stations, prayers and meditation. Handy little booklet.

I was thrilled to find this version of the Stations of the Cross. My dad who is 93 told me this was the version he said as a young boy, and he was so happy that I was able to find them. Thank you for sending them so promptly. I received them in excellent condition.

This particular publication, St. Alphonsus Ligouri, The Way of the Cross, is the best and brings the reality of our Lord's sacrifice face to face.

    Perfect for Lent and beyond.

Posted by Lisa on 30th Apr 2019

I purchased these for Lent since our church copies tend to disappear towards the end of Lent. It will be nice to use throughout the year on my own since it is the same one my parish uses.

Beautiful translation, one of my favorite Lenten devotionals. The booklet is a handy pocket size, made of sturdy paper, with spiritually edifying mosaic images.
