St. Maximilian Kolbe

Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. He was known for his devotion to Mary and his work in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Kolbe's act of self-sacrifice and his strong faith in the face of extreme adversity have made him a symbol of courage, compassion, and the triumph of good over evil. He was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
