St. Lawrence

Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of the city of Rome in the 3rd century. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Anglican Communion. Lawrence is best known for his martyrdom, during which he was roasted alive on a gridiron. According to tradition, Lawrence joked with his tormentors, saying, "Turn me over, I'm done on this side!" This remark has led to his patronage of comedians. Lawrence is also known for his care for the poor and needy. He distributed the Church's wealth to the poor before his martyrdom, which is why he is the patron saint of cooks and firefighters, among others.

Feast Day is on August 10.

Patronage: Archivists, cooks, comedians, and firefighters.
